Color Infused Maple Burl Box

The colors in this small box defies the observer into not believing this item is made of wood however, yes...this is wood.  Maple Burl Wood infused with red and blue dyes.

The next question always is, "How did you color it?"  

The standard answer - Wood can be colored via many different methods - most traditionally stains that are either brushed on or, wiped on with a rag.

In this case... Color is infused thru the wood, from end-to-end, via a suctioning process where the wood is placed in a vacuum chamber  - with the desired color mix in liquid form and literally put under so much pressure the color is infused from end to end in the grain - yes, on the outside and the inside - yes, all the way through the wood.

AND...since the wood is a burl - there are knots and inner branch inclusions making the grain twist tightly and in different directions. When placed in a high pressure vacuum chamber, the orientation in the grain is so lightly twisted in these spots the color cannot penetrate it and stains only the straight, open grains with color, leaving the natural color and grain of the knots or inner branches with no color.  Look closely at the piece, read above again and it will make sense.
