Scroll Carved & Scalloped Hollow Form with Verde-Gris Patina

This piece started out as a solid piece of Maple wood which Carmen takes thru many stages to arrive at this final piece.  Carmen starts by turning the piece of wood on a lathe to create the box form out the single piece - insuring the grains match and as little wood is wasted for long lasting snug fit, also, leaving extra thickness in strategic places to allow for carving depth, symmetry and wall even wall thickness.  

Once the Box lid and base comes off the lathe, the design is laid out taking into account the pattern and proportions.  In this case Carmen draws her initial ideas free-hand.  Once laid out Carmen then carves both sections with a micro power carver and hands chisels.  For added dimension on the lid and the base of the pedestal, Carmen used a wood burning pyrography pen to create the small notches.

After the woodwork is completed with carving and texturing, Carmen then applied a Decorative Rusted Metal Patina finish created with many layers of paints and several hours of drying time in between.   For this particular oxidized metal finish, Carmen used many different patinas wanting many shades to enhance the movement in the carving and pyrography.
