Decorative Platter: Sangre Taina | Taino Blood

About this Item: 

This decorative wood platter made of Ash was made by Carmen on a woodturning lathe. The texture at the center of the piece is also created while the piece is on the lathe. The texture and Carmen's color choice are incorporated to simulate a pottery effect yet, not betray that it is made of wood.  

The Pyrography design was inspired by petroglyphs left behind by the Indigenous Taino Indians in Puerto Rico. These symbols and more, preserved for hundreds of years, are found etched into stones all over the island.  When you observe the motif on the outer lip of the platter, the repetition of pattern represent a bird.  Looking beyond the geometrical shapes, you will recognize the triangle as a beak, the circle as a head and, the center dot an eye.   

After the pyrography is complete, Carmen then colored and sealed the platter.
